Serums — frequently asked questions
A serum carries a concentrated active ingredient, such as vitamin C, retinol or niacinamide, in a light texture that sinks in quickly. It goes on after cleansing and before moisturizer. It does not replace the moisturizer.
For dark spots and dullness, vitamin C, niacinamide or alpha arbutin. For fine lines, retinol or peptides. For tight, dehydrated skin, hyaluronic acid. For oily, blemish-prone skin, niacinamide or salicylic acid. One active at a time is the easiest way to see what works.
Most people use vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night rather than layering them. Start any new active slowly and wear sunscreen every day while you use retinol. If your skin stings or peels, space the applications out.
Use a pea-sized amount on two or three evenings a week, then build up as your skin allows, with a moisturizer after it. Some dryness at the start is common. Do not use retinol while pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor agrees.
Not on the same evening. Alternate them, for example acids on one night and retinol on another, and cut back if your skin turns red or sore.
