Start with clean, dry nails and no hand cream on them. Apply a base coat, then two thin coats of colour rather than one thick one, and finish with a top coat, running the brush along the tip of the nail to seal the edge. Reapplying top coat every two or three days adds life.
A strengthening treatment used as a base, cuticle oil massaged in every evening, and gloves for washing up and cleaning all help. Nails grow slowly, so give any treatment a few weeks. If splitting comes with pain, swelling or discolouration, see a doctor or pharmacist.
It fills the fine vertical ridges many nails have, so colour goes on smooth. Use it in place of a base coat, then paint as usual.
It is gentler and less drying for nails and cuticles, which makes it the better everyday choice. It works a little more slowly on glitter and very dark shades, where a few extra seconds of contact does the job.
