The honest truth about hair loss in Lebanon
Hair loss is one of the most-searched health concerns in Lebanon — and one of the most poorly addressed. Most local solutions fall into two camps: expensive transplant clinics (US$3,000–8,000+) and pharmacy shelves stocked with "hair vitamins" that have weak clinical evidence.
Minoxidil 5% sits in between: it's one of only two FDA-approved treatments for androgenetic alopecia (the other being finasteride, prescription-only), it costs less than US$30/month, and it has 40 years of clinical data behind it.
This guide explains how to use it correctly, what results to expect, and the three minoxidil products we recommend most for the Lebanese market.
What minoxidil actually does
Minoxidil was originally developed as a blood pressure medication in the 1960s. Researchers noticed a strange side effect: patients on it grew hair, sometimes in unusual places. Upjohn (now Pfizer) reformulated it as a topical treatment in the 1980s.
The mechanism, in plain language:
- It opens potassium channels in the scalp's blood vessels, increasing blood flow to hair follicles.
- It extends the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle, so individual strands grow longer and thicker before shedding.
- It re-activates dormant follicles — the ones that have miniaturised but haven't permanently scarred.
It does not affect DHT (the hormone driving most male and female pattern hair loss). That's what finasteride does. This is important: minoxidil treats the symptom; finasteride treats the underlying hormonal cause. Many users combine both for best results.
Who minoxidil 5% works for
Minoxidil works best for:
- ✅ Early-to-moderate pattern hair loss (Norwood 2–4 in men; Ludwig 1–2 in women)
- ✅ Diffuse thinning across the top and crown
- ✅ Beard density (off-label but very common)
- ✅ Eyebrow regrowth (with caution and lower concentration)
It works poorly or not at all for:
- ❌ Receded hairlines in advanced stages — the follicles are usually too far gone
- ❌ Completely bald patches older than 5 years
- ❌ Scarring alopecia (lichen planopilaris, etc.) — see a dermatologist
- ❌ Telogen effluvium from temporary causes (illness, iron deficiency, stress) — treat the underlying cause first
Quick self-check: If you can still see fine "vellus" hairs in the thinning area when you look up close, minoxidil has something to work with. If the scalp is completely smooth, the chance of meaningful regrowth is low.
Minoxidil brands available in Lebanon
There are three minoxidil products we recommend, plus one supporting product worth knowing about.
🏆 Best Overall — B&S Reverse Hair Loss Minoxidil 5% Spray, 100 ml
This is our best-selling hair regrowth product by a wide margin. It's a true 5% minoxidil solution in spray format (not foam), which is the original formulation studied in the FDA trials. The spray applicator makes daily use practical — most users report it takes 90 seconds twice a day.

🧴 Best Foam Format — Regain for Men Extra Strength Scalp Foam, 73 ml
Foam minoxidil dries faster and doesn't drip — better for men with shorter hair or anyone who applies in the morning before work. The slight downside is less active ingredient per gram than the spray.

💊 Best Supporting Treatment for Women — Vichy Dercos Aminexil Clinical 5
Aminexil is the closest thing to a "minoxidil cousin." It's not as potent but has a much better safety profile for daily use in women, with single-dose ampoules. Many of our female customers stack low-dose minoxidil with Aminexil — applying minoxidil at night and Aminexil during the day.

🌿 Best Topical Stack — The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Serum for Hair Density
This is a peptide-based serum that works through a completely different mechanism (signalling the dermal papilla). It's the most evidence-backed adjunct to minoxidil currently on the market, and roughly half the price of equivalent peptide serums.

How to apply minoxidil 5% — step-by-step
This is the part most people get wrong, which is why minoxidil has such a wide range of reported success. Done correctly, it works on ~65% of users. Done poorly, that number drops to under 30%.
- Start with completely dry hair and scalp. Wet hair dilutes the product and causes it to run.
- Part your hair to expose the scalp in the thinning area. The product needs to reach the scalp, not just the hair.
- Apply 1 ml (about 6–7 spray pumps, or one foam-cap-full) to the affected area. More is not better — excess minoxidil doesn't increase efficacy, it just increases side effects.
- Massage gently with fingertips for 30 seconds to spread evenly. Don't rub aggressively.
- Let it dry completely before bed or styling — about 4 hours for spray, 1 hour for foam.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after each application. Minoxidil on hands can transfer to other body parts (or to a partner) and cause unwanted hair growth.
- Apply twice daily, morning and evening. Consistency matters more than dose.
- Wait at least 4 hours before washing the area.
Realistic results timeline
This is where most people give up too early. The minoxidil timeline is psychologically brutal because it gets worse before it gets better.
| Timeframe | What you'll likely experience |
|---|---|
| Weeks 0–4 | Nothing visible. Possible scalp dryness or itching. |
| Weeks 4–8 | The "shedding phase." Many users panic and quit here. Minoxidil pushes hairs in the telogen (resting) phase to shed early so new ones can grow. This is a positive sign that the medication is working. Shedding usually lasts 4–6 weeks. |
| Months 3–4 | New, thin "baby hairs" appear in the treated area. Don't expect them to look like normal hair yet. |
| Months 4–6 | Baby hairs thicken and lengthen. Hair density visibly improves. |
| Months 6–12 | Full results visible. This is your new baseline. |
| After month 12 | Maintenance — you must continue indefinitely. Stopping reverses gains within 3–6 months. |
The "must continue indefinitely" is the most important sentence in this guide. Minoxidil is a maintenance treatment, not a cure. Plan to use it for the foreseeable future, or don't start.
Side effects and how to manage them
Most side effects are mild and manageable:
- Scalp dryness or flaking — the alcohol in the solution is the cause. Try the foam version (less alcohol) or apply a light scalp oil 1 hour after minoxidil.
- Itching — usually transient, but if it persists, the propylene glycol carrier (in solution form) is the likely culprit. Switch to foam.
- Increased shedding (initial) — covered above. It's normal.
- Unwanted facial hair growth (women) — usually from minoxidil migrating during sleep. Apply only in the morning, or sleep on your back the first 2 hours after applying.
Serious side effects are rare but include rapid heartbeat, chest discomfort, dizziness, or significant facial swelling. If any of these occur, stop and consult a doctor immediately.
Stacking minoxidil for better results
Most dermatologists who specialise in hair loss use a multi-modal approach. The most evidence-backed stacks:
- Minoxidil + finasteride (men) — gold standard. Finasteride requires a prescription in Lebanon; consult a dermatologist.
- Minoxidil + microneedling — a 0.5–1.5 mm dermaroller used 1–2x/week before minoxidil application can improve absorption and stimulate growth factors.
- Minoxidil + oral hair vitamins — B&S HairFluence or similar formulas provide biotin, zinc, and selenium. Marginal but cheap to add.
- Minoxidil + anti-hair-loss shampoo — Vichy Dercos Energy or Ducray Creastim.

Cost of a 6-month minoxidil treatment in Lebanon
A 100 ml spray bottle of B&S Minoxidil 5% lasts approximately 50 days at proper twice-daily dosing. For a full year of treatment, budget for 7–8 bottles. The total cost is dramatically lower than a single PRP session or hair transplant consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Can women use 5% minoxidil? Yes, though many gynecologists prefer 2% for women. The 5% concentration is more effective but increases the risk of unwanted facial hair growth. If using 5%, apply only at bedtime and wash hands carefully.
Does minoxidil work for beard growth? Yes, this is one of the most common off-label uses. Apply a smaller amount (0.5 ml) once daily to the beard area. Expect the same 3–6 month timeline.
Is minoxidil safe long-term? Topical minoxidil has been on the market since 1988 with an excellent long-term safety record at recommended doses.
Can I stop using minoxidil once my hair grows back? No — stopping minoxidil causes the newly-grown hair to fall out within 3–6 months. This is the single biggest limitation of the treatment.
Will minoxidil regrow a receded hairline? Rarely. Minoxidil works best on the crown and mid-scalp. For the hairline, results are typically modest.
Can I use minoxidil with other shampoos? Yes — use your normal shampoo. Just ensure your scalp is fully dry before applying minoxidil.
How does B&S Minoxidil 5% compare to Regaine/Rogaine? Both are 5% minoxidil solutions. The active ingredient is identical. The difference is primarily formulation (spray vs foam) and price — B&S is locally distributed at a substantially lower price point.
Going deeper
Hair loss is rarely caused by a single factor. If you've been losing hair recently and don't have a family history of pattern baldness, also consider:
- Iron and ferritin levels (especially for women) — get a blood test
- Thyroid function — both hyper- and hypothyroidism cause hair loss
- Vitamin D levels — chronically low D is associated with telogen effluvium
- Stress and sleep quality — see our Best Sleep Supplements in Lebanon guide
